Origin and meaning of Dafne

Dafne comes from the Greek dáphnē (δάφνη), 'laurel'. In myth she is the nymph who, pursued by Apollo, was turned into a laurel tree to escape him — thus laurel became the emblem of glory and poetry. The name evokes nature, grace and freedom. Used delicately and uncommonly in Italy and the Spanish-speaking world, abroad it is known as Daphne and Daphné, dear to English and French literary tradition.
