Origin and meaning of Clelia
Clelia comes from the Latin Cloelia, the name of the gens Cloelia, and recalls the legendary Roman heroine who, held hostage by the Etruscans, escaped by swimming across the Tiber, entering history as a symbol of female courage. In Christian tradition it is borne by Saint Clelia Barbieri, the young founder of a religious order. Found almost only in Italy, classical and noble in flavour, it has its counterpart in the French Clélie. It evokes daring, virtue, and ancient dignity.
