Origin and meaning of Callisto

Callisto comes from the Greek kállistos, the superlative of kalós, 'most beautiful.' The name joins the classical ideal of beauty to a full, sonorous sound. In Christian tradition it was borne by Pope Callixtus I, an early pontiff and martyr, after whom one of Rome's great catacombs is named. Found almost only in Italy and quite rare, it has counterparts in the Spanish Calixto and the French Calliste. It keeps an ancient, luminous, distinctive charm.
