Origin and meaning of Baldassare
Baldassare goes back to the Akkadian-Babylonian Bel-shar-usur, 'may (the god) Bel protect the king,' a name borne in tradition by the Babylonian king Belshazzar. In the West it took hold above all because it was given to one of the three Magi, the king who came from the East to honour Jesus. Common in Italy, it has counterparts in the Spanish Baltasar and the French Balthazar. Rich in history and suggestion, it joins biblical and royal echoes to a broad, solemn sound.
