Origin and meaning of Ascanio
Ascanio comes from the Latin Ascanius, itself from the Greek Askánios, a name of mythological origin: in the Aeneid, Ascanius—also called Iulus—is the son of Aeneas and the legendary ancestor of Rome's gens Iulia. The name thus carries an epic, aristocratic echo much loved in the Italian Renaissance. Found almost only in Italy and quite rare, it keeps a cultured, ancient charm. The French form is Ascagne, the Latin one Ascanius.
