Origin and meaning of Arsenio

Arsenio comes from the Greek arsénios, 'virile, manly, strong,' from árren, 'man.' The name expresses vigour and masculinity, but its Christian fortune rests on Saint Arsenius the Great, a learned tutor at the imperial court who withdrew into the hermit's life. Found in Italy and Spanish-speaking countries, it remains fairly rare; it has a famous French counterpart in Arsène and a Russian one in Arseny. It keeps a firm, ancient, slightly literary tone.
