Origin and meaning of Aristide

Aristide comes from the Greek Aristéides, from áristos, 'the best, the most excellent,' pointing to moral and civic excellence. In antiquity it was borne by Aristides the Just, an Athenian statesman famed for his integrity. Common in Italy and above all in France, where it has had illustrious bearers among politicians and artists, it keeps a noble, high-minded tone. The Spanish form is Arístides. It is a classically flavoured name evoking uprightness and worth.
