Antonella is a pet form of Antonia that has taken on a life of its own as an independent name. It derives from the gens Antonia, an illustrious Roman family whose name is traditionally linked to the idea of someone 'precious, praiseworthy.' Typically Italian and popular in Latin America too, it enjoyed great success in the later twentieth century.
