Origin and meaning of Andrei
Andrei is the Romanian form of Andrew, from the Greek Andréas, built on anḗr, andrós, “man”: it means “manly, courageous”. Saint Andrew, the first apostle called by Jesus, is said to have preached in Scythia Minor — today's Dobrogea — and is the patron saint of Romania, celebrated with a national holiday on 30 November. Since 2005 Andrei has been the most registered boy's name in Romania, loved for its crisp sound and its bond with the country's protector.
