Origin and meaning of Amato
Amato comes straight from the Latin amatus, the past participle of amare: 'beloved, cherished, dear.' It is a hopeful name expressing the deep affection with which a child is welcomed, and in Christian tradition it was borne by several early-medieval bishop-saints. Distinctly Italian and now fairly rare, it has a French counterpart in Aimé and a Spanish one in Amado, both with the same tender meaning. Its warm, simple sense is easy to grasp.
