Origin and meaning of Alexandru
Alexandru is the Romanian form of Alexander, from the Greek Aléxandros, joining aléxein, “to defend”, and anḗr, andrós, “man”: “protector of men”. Borne by Alexander the Great and by a long line of voivodes — Alexandru cel Bun of Moldavia, and Alexandru Ioan Cuza, first prince of the United Principalities in 1859 — it is one of the sturdiest boys' names in Romanian tradition, often shortened to Alex or Sandu. Its name day falls on 30 August.
