Agnese is the Italian form of Agnes, from the Greek hagné, 'pure, chaste'; since antiquity it was also linked to the Latin agnus, 'lamb,' a symbol of innocence. It owes its popularity to Saint Agnes, a young and much-venerated Roman martyr. Common above all in Italy, it is a name of quiet, ancient charm, blending softness and resolve.
