How group gifts work in a baby registry
The group gift is the feature that makes a digital baby registry truly useful: it lets several people join forces and give an expensive item that no one would buy on their own. Here we explain how it works in practice, how to set it up and the most common questions we receive.
The idea in one sentence
A single item on the registry (e.g. an 800 € stroller) is split into many open shares: each guest chooses how much to contribute and the progress bar updates. Once the price is reached, the item can be purchased. One important point: BabyWish does not process payments. It records the pledges and the progress, but the money never passes through the platform — you receive it directly from the participants (cash, bank transfer, etc.), with no commission.
When to enable it
You don't need it on every item. The rule of thumb we suggest:
- Items under 50 €: individual gift, better not to split.
- Items between 50 and 150 €: optional, depends on your group of guests.
- Items over 150 €: enable it almost always, if only to give the chance to take part to those who want to contribute a smaller amount.
Strollers, modular travel systems, i-Size car seats and high-end co-sleeping cribs are the natural candidates. But it also works very well for memberships (infant massage classes, a baby swimming course, a postpartum doula) that carry a significant cost and a great emotional value.
How to split the share
Two approaches are possible, and each has its pros and cons:
Open shares
Each guest decides how much to put in. It's the most flexible model: those who want can give 20 €, others 200 €. We only advise against it if you're worried about not reaching the total amount.
Preset shares
The registry suggests, for example, 4 shares of 75 €. Whoever picks a share is clearly committed. More predictable, but less welcoming for those on a smaller budget.
Most moms on BabyWish choose open shares: they're more welcoming and, in practice, we've never seen a group gift fail to reach its target when it's enabled on genuinely well-chosen items.
What happens if the target amount isn't reached?
Two options:
- The mom covers the difference out of her own pocket and buys the item anyway: the amount gathered is still a big help.
- You choose a cheaper alternative that fits within the amount reached. In any case, you receive the money directly, not BabyWish: if you decide not to go ahead, you return to the participants what you had received. Since no sums are held by the platform, there are no automatic credits or refunds to manage.
Frequently asked questions
Do guests see who contributed?
No. By default we only show the overall progress (e.g. "620 of 800 € reached"). Whoever puts in a share can decide to sign their message or stay anonymous.
Can I change my mind after contributing?
Yes, as long as the item hasn't been purchased yet. Each guest receives a unique management link to edit or cancel their share.
Is a group gift taxable?
In Italy, for normal amounts (within a few hundred euros), gifts between private individuals for an occasion like a birth don't create tax obligations, neither for the giver nor for the recipient. For very large amounts (thousands of euros) it's worth checking with an accountant, but that's a rare case in baby registries.

Our advice
If you're just starting out: enable the group gift on 2-3 big-ticket items, leave the others as individual gifts, and write a couple of lines in the description explaining that even a small share is welcome. You'll see participation rise noticeably.
