Origin and meaning of Grigorios
Grigorios comes from the Greek grēgorós (γρήγορος), 'watchful, awake', from the verb egeírō, 'to awaken, to rise'. The name is borne by numerous Orthodox saints and patriarchs, including Gregory of Nazianzus, one of the great Church Fathers, as well as several popes under the Latin form Gregory. In Greece it retains a learned, traditional tone, often shortened to Grigoris, valued for its link to theological wisdom.
