Herkunft und Bedeutung von Sibilla

Sibilla takes up the Greek Síbylla, the name of the sibyls, the prophetesses of antiquity who revealed the will of the gods — the Cumaean and Delphic ones being the most famous. It therefore means 'prophetess, seer' and carries an aura of mysterious, inspired wisdom. Michelangelo immortalised them on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. In Italy it is a refined, uncommon name chosen for its literary elegance; it is also known in German-speaking lands as Sibylle and Sybille.
