Sebastian comes from the Greek Sebastianós, 'from Sebaste', a city whose name derives from sebastós 'venerable, august', the equivalent of the Latin Augustus. It owes its spread to Saint Sebastian, a Roman martyr often depicted in art. It is much loved in Germany, Poland, Scandinavia and the Spanish-speaking world as Sebastián.
