Herkunft und Bedeutung von Pia

Pia is the feminine of Latin pius, 'pious, devout, respectful of family and the sacred' — pietas, one of the virtues the Romans prized most. Short and clear, the name conveys gentleness and devotion. Dante made it memorable through the melancholy Pia de' Tolomei of his Purgatorio. It is used in Italy and even more in Germany and the Scandinavian countries, where it is loved precisely for its spare, musical sound and its easy recognisability across many languages.
