Naomi comes from the Hebrew Noʿomi (נָעֳמִי), 'my delight, sweetness, pleasantness'. In the Bible she is Ruth's mother-in-law, a model of loyalty and family affection. Curiously, a homophonous Japanese name also exists, written with different kanji. The name is common in Israel, English-speaking countries, Japan and Germany, valued for its soft, international sound; related forms such as Noemi, Noémie and Noemí carry it across Europe.
