Origine et signification de Katia

Katia is a Russian pet form of Ekaterina, the equivalent of the Italian Caterina, going back to the Greek Aikaterine, traditionally linked to katharós, 'pure': hence 'pure.' It entered Italy in the twentieth century and has an affectionate, cosmopolitan feel. It is found in Italy, France and across Germanic and Slavic regions, where the spellings Katja and Katya coexist. It was borne by the volcanologist Katia Krafft, a devoted student of volcanoes.
