Germana comes from the Latin germanus, which meant 'blood brother, genuine' and, secondarily, 'from Germania'. The name thus blends the idea of authenticity and kinship with that of the ancient Germanic people. It is linked to Saint Germaine Cousin, a humble sixteenth-century French shepherdess. Common mainly in Italy and France, as Germaine, it is now fairly rare, with a classical, understated tone.
