Adelaide comes from the Germanic Adalheidis, from adal, 'noble,' and heid, 'nature, kind': 'of noble nature, of illustrious stock.' Made venerable by Saint Adelaide, Holy Roman Empress, it is loved in Italy and France, while in the English-speaking world it also names the Australian city of Adelaide. Elegant and a touch vintage, it is making a comeback for its aristocratic sound and the graceful nickname Ada.
