Teodoro comes from the Greek Theódōros, joining theós 'god' and dôron 'gift' — hence 'gift of God'. Ancient and dignified, it was borne by saints and Byzantine emperors who spread its prestige across the Christian East. Today it is used in Italy and Spain, while the rest of Europe favours forms such as Theodore, Théodore and the Russian Fyodor. It conveys a sense of gratitude and grace received.
