Saverio comes, by way of the Spanish Xavier, from the Basque Etxeberria, 'new house,' the birthplace of Saint Francis Xavier, the great Jesuit missionary to Asia. A place name became a given name through devotion to the saint. In Italy it is traditional above all in the south, with an elegant, slightly uncommon feel; in the forms Xavier and Javier it is widespread across the Hispanic and French-speaking worlds. It evokes a spirit of adventure, openness and refined restraint.
