Romano comes from Latin Romanus, 'Roman, citizen of Rome' — born as an ethnic label, it became a given name already in imperial times and was borne by many saints and by Byzantine emperors. It evokes the pride and heritage of the Eternal City. Common in Italy and, as Román, across the Hispanic world, while the cognates Roman and Romain circulate throughout Europe and the Slavic lands.
