Placido descends from Latin placidus, 'calm, gentle, serene,' from the root of placere, 'to please.' It is a wish-name, promising a peaceable, easy-going nature at peace with itself and others. Christian tradition ties it to Saint Placidus, the young disciple of Saint Benedict.
