Osvaldo comes from the Germanic Oswald, made of os, 'god, divinity', and wald, 'power, rule': it thus means 'the one who rules with divine power'. The name was borne by Oswald of Northumbria, a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon king and saint. Found in Italy and, as Oswaldo and Osvald, in the Hispanic world and in German-speaking and Scandinavian lands, it keeps a noble, ancient tone, with a strong sound recalling royalty and protection.
