Orlando is the Italian form of the Germanic Hrodland, from hrod, 'glory, fame', and land, 'land, country': it means 'famous in his land, glorious in the country'. Made immortal by the chivalric poems about Orlando, Charlemagne's paladin, it evokes heroism and loyalty. In Italy it is a classic, charming men's name; in the variants Roland, Rolando and Roldán it is common throughout Europe and Latin America.
