Marta comes from the Aramaic Marta, 'lady, mistress of the house.' In the Gospels she is the sister of Lazarus and of Mary of Bethany, a symbol of diligence and attentive hospitality. A plain, grounded name, it is common in Italy, Spain, Poland, Scandinavia and throughout the Slavic world. Its short, firm form — almost identical across many languages (Martha, Marthe, Márta) — makes it practical, elegant and universally understood.
