Mara traces back to the Hebrew mar, 'bitter': in the Bible it is the name Naomi gives herself on returning to Bethlehem, voicing the grief of her losses. Beyond that melancholy origin, the name is loved today for its simplicity and its short, gentle sound. Found in Italy, German-speaking countries and the Hispanic world, it is often also felt to be a warm short form of Maria.
