Leonora is a shortened form of Eleonora, a name traditionally traced to Greek roots and read as 'luminous, shining,' a symbol of light and nobility of spirit. From the Middle Ages it spread through European courts thanks to noblewomen and queens. Made famous by several operatic heroines, it has a soft, aristocratic sound. It is found in Italy, Spain and Germanic regions; in painting the surrealist Leonora Carrington shone.
