Leandro comes from the Greek Léandros, from léon, 'lion,' and anér/andrós, 'man': hence 'lion-man,' a symbol of courage and strength. In myth he is the youth who swam the Hellespont each night to reach his beloved Hero. Common mainly in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Latin America, it has a soft, chivalrous sound. It was borne by the Venetian painter Leandro Bassano; abroad it matches Leander and Léandre.
