Ferdinando comes from the Gothic Germanic Frithnanth, from fardi, 'journey', and nanth, 'bold, daring': it means 'bold in the journey, brave traveller'. Borne by many kings of Spain and of the Two Sicilies, it became famous across Europe. In Italy it is a solemn, traditional classic; in the forms Fernando, Ferdinand and Fernand it is extremely common in the Spanish-speaking and Germanic worlds.
