Fausto descends from the Latin adjective faustus, 'fortunate, auspicious, favourable', related to favēre, 'to favour'. It was a name of good omen in ancient Rome, carrying the wish for happiness and success. Made famous in literature by Goethe's Faust, it is now common in Italy, Spain and Portugal. In Italy it instantly recalls the great cycling champion Fausto Coppi, a byword for talent and sporting legend.
