Evaristo comes from the Greek Euárestos, from eu, 'well', and aréskō, 'to please': it means 'pleasing, excellent, the best'. The name expresses excellence and goodwill. It is tied to Saint Evaristus, one of the very first popes in Church history and an early martyr. Used rarely and anciently in Italy, Spain and Portugal, abroad it is known as the French Évariste, borne by the brilliant mathematician Évariste Galois.
