Eusebio comes from the Greek Eusébios, from eu, 'well', and sébas, 'reverence': it means 'pious, devout, respectful'. The name blends spirituality and nobility of spirit. It was borne by Eusebius of Caesarea, father of Christian historiography, and made famous in the twentieth century by Eusébio, the legendary Portuguese footballer nicknamed 'the Black Panther'. Used mainly in Italy and the Spanish-speaking world, abroad it lives on in the Latin form Eusebius.
