Dorotea comes from the Greek Dōrótheos, from dôron, 'gift,' and theós, 'God': 'gift of God,' the same meaning as Theodora with its elements reversed. Made venerable by Saint Dorothea, martyr of Caesarea, it is common in Italy, Spain and Poland and, as Dorothea, across the Germanic and Scandinavian world. With a rich, solemn sound, it carries an ancient, noble charm. Elegant and a touch old-fashioned, it offers the graceful nickname Dora, still much loved.
