Donata comes from the Latin donata, past participle of donare, and means 'given, offered (to God)'. It was a votive, hopeful name with which Christian parents expressed gratitude for a birth, symbolically offering their daughter to the Lord. Simple and bright, it has a serene, ancient tone. Used mainly in Italy and similarly in the Spanish-speaking world, it remains a rare and gently traditional choice.
