Carolina is a feminine derivative of Carlo, from the Germanic karl, 'free man,' Latinised as Carolus: it evokes a woman 'free and strong.' Common in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Latin America, the name also has a regal streak — the two American Carolinas were named in honour of King Charles. With a rich, melodic sound, it blends elegance and liveliness, alongside the graceful nickname Carol and the English and French form Caroline.
