Bruno comes from the Germanic brun, 'brown, dark-haired or dark-skinned,' but also 'armour, shield,' carrying ideas of strength and protection. Already common in the Middle Ages, it was borne by Saint Bruno of Cologne, founder of the Carthusian order. A sober, masculine name, it is common in Italy, Spain, Portugal and France, and well known in the German-speaking area where it originated.
