Alberto is the Italian and Spanish form of the Germanic Adalberto, from adal, 'noble,' and beraht, 'bright, illustrious' — hence 'of shining nobility.' It was borne by rulers, princes and saints such as Albertus Magnus, patron of scientists. Long a masculine classic in Italy and Spain, it is also well established in German- and Portuguese-speaking areas.
