Ming corresponds to the Chinese character 明 ('bright, shining, clear'), built from the signs for sun and moon — an image of light and intelligence. It is used as a unisex given name and as an element in many compound names; it also names the celebrated Ming dynasty. Very present in the Chinese-speaking world, elsewhere it is known mainly through its link to Chinese history and culture.
