Dimitrios is the Greek form of Demetrius, drawn from the name of the goddess Demeter (Dēmḗtēr), deity of grain and the earth: the meaning is 'devoted to Demeter, consecrated to the land.' It is one of Greece's most traditional men's names, tied to the cult of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, much venerated in the Christian East. Often shortened to Dímos or Tákis, it stays very common throughout the Hellenic world.
