Ren is a Japanese unisex name, often written 蓮 ('lotus flower') or 恋 ('love'). The lotus, which blooms pure from muddy water, symbolises beauty and rebirth in Buddhist culture, giving the name a gentle depth. Short and musical, in recent years it has been one of the most popular names for boys in Japan. Beyond the islands it remains little known.
